Root Canals

When the soft inner part of the tooth gets injured, inflamed, or infected, a dentist will need to perform a root canal treatment to fix it. Despite what most people may think, root canals are not scary. They’re the best way to preserve the structure of your tooth and prevent further complications from occurring.

What Happens During a Root Canal Treatment?

During a root canal treatment, we remove the soft center of the tooth, which is known as the pulp. We’ll need to drill a hole at the top of your tooth to access it, but you will be under anesthesia and won’t feel any pain. Once the pulp is removed, we’ll clean and disinfect the inside of the tooth to ensure the infection is completely gone. Finally, we’ll seal the opening with a temporary filling, which will eventually be replaced with a permanent one or a crown.

Common Causes of Damaged Pulp

Damaged pulp can cause pain, inflammation, and tooth sensitivity to heat and cold. This happens because the protective layers of the pulp are compromised and allowing bacteria to get in and infect it. Below are some of the common causes of damaged tooth pulp.

  • Mouth trauma
  • Bruxism (teeth grinding)
  • Fractured tooth
  • Tooth decay or cavities
  • Jaw misalignment
