Get to Know How Certain Foods Affect Your Overall Health

Much has been said about the importance of exercise and diet for our overall health. However, only a few people know that poor oral health directly affects your overall well-being, which may cause a decline in the totality of your health. In Golden Glades, restorative dentistry is a common need for people, especially those who are neglecting their oral care.

A missing tooth greatly impacts a person in that it influences your social and mental happiness. Those with a missing tooth tend to be less confident since others can easily notice this inadequacy.

Refusing to smile not only incites a negative impression from other people but also impacts the quality of your day.

What are the Worst Foods for Your Teeth?

Whether you’re a kid or an adult, the reasons for tooth decay remain the same. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people aged six to 19 years old have cavities at a level of chronic disease. Cavities are formed due to plaque buildup in the teeth, which attacks the enamel, causing tooth decay.

Tooth decay is mostly caused by sugary and acidic treats left in the mouth to linger. Below is a list of foods you should avoid, or at least limit.

Sour Candies

Sour candies contain a terrible combination of ingredients that are harmful to your teeth. For one, they are sugary. Sugar from sour candies releases acids that damage the teeth. Secondly, sour candies carry more and different kinds of acid that are detrimental to the teeth.

And lastly, its chewy texture makes them difficult to remove from the teeth, which in turn could be the home for harmful bacteria.

Bread

Bread may be a better alternative to rice for your diet. However, when broken down, bread also becomes sticky, causing them to cling easily to the crevices in your mouth. Whole wheat bread, on the other hand, is safer to eat since they have fewer sugars.

Soft Drinks

These beverages hold dangerous acids that attack the teeth's enamel. When the enamel is damaged, your teeth become weak, increasing your risk for cavities and dental erosion. What’s worse is when you brush your teeth right after drinking soft drinks. Since carbonated drinks can weaken your teeth, brushing them afterward could cause abrasion and further damage.

Ice

Sometimes we don’t understand what it is about ice that makes us want to chew those cubes every time. However, chewing ice could result in chipped, broken, or cracked teeth. If you can’t help yourself, maybe skip the ice for your next drink order.

Citrus Fruits

We understand that lemons and oranges are good for our health because of their vitamin C content. Unfortunately, eating too many citrus fruits can damage our enamel and weaken our teeth. As per advice, you should eat these fruits in moderation and rinse your mouth with water right after.
